Thrifting

I was feeling whimsical today - creative, even.  Like... well, you might say I felt like spending money at a thrift store.  So my ears really perked up when my mom mentioned taking the boys to town for haircuts.  (She just got nine stitches in her finger, so she couldn't clip them herself.)

We have three thrift stores in our little town, and I hit two of them.  At one I swiped a pair of skinny jeans for $1.50.

At the other one, I got two casual shirts for $1.00 each, and two books for $0.30 each.  Deal? Deal.

i wanted a babydoll shirt like this when i was thirteen and never found one....

hail, shirt, jeans, and books.

The designing book was a real find.  And I couldn't resist Specials by Scott Westerfeld...even though I haven't read Uglies or Pretties yet.  Come on, it was thirty cents!

I'll post days four and five for Lérowen's challenge tomorrow, as I have to get offline.

In Style? Why not?

I found this amazing fashion website.  You will not believe the hip clothes they've got...you would be the queen of the runway in anything with their name brand on it.

What's it called?

Recollections.

Maybe you'd prefer a ball gown? Go on...enchant yourself with thoughts of Cinderella...just make them Victorian.

AMFS - Day 6-7

Sorry I missed a day! I had homeschool co-op and then I worked on a report for almost the whole afternoon, and then I went to writing club.  And then, after we had gone out to look at the stars, I dashed inside to take my pictures and the camera died on me.  Many apologies, but here was my outfit for yesterday.

I love my peasant outfit!

∞ The Specifics ∞
Shirt: Decree / JCPenney
Skirt: Merona / Target
Necklace: Landstrom's, Black Hills gold / South Dakota somewhere

And now for Day 7!

Today, we went to the Science Museum to see the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit.  It was amazing to see a piece of God's history from 2,000 years ago.  It was also fun to be surrounded with people who also found it amazing.  If you ever come to visit my state, visit the Science Museum.  It's fun for all ages.

Oh, and they have these staircases with steps that each make a different note when you step on them.  They were fun - and good for physical activity.  Cause if you want to make a song, you have to run up and down a lot.  And the banisters were perfect for sliding down.  I've never slid down a banister before, but these were too tempting.  Ooh, it was so fun.
Just thought I'd let you know...

Oh, and this was not the outfit I wore there today because its like 80 degrees here! We are having Indian Summer, and usually I enjoy it, but not this year.  It's just not right to have hot weather paired with leaves falling off trees.  I was sweltering in this jacket and scarf.  But you can pretend otherwise.

∞ The Specifics ∞

Jacket: Sonora / JCPenney or Kohls
Shirt: Mossimo / Target
Scarf: Gift
Hoop earrings: Claires / Gift
Jeans: Mossimo / Target (I love Target, okay? By the way, these are the jeans I wrote about in "Because He Cares..."

∞ Fashion Tip of the Day (combined with a quote) ∞

"Who's to say what is "proper"? What if it was agreed that "proper" was wearing a codfish on your head? Would you wear it?" - Alice Kingsley, Alice in Wonderland '10

Don't go along with the flow.  Wear what is comfortable to you: as long as it honors the Lord.  Even though gauchos are out of style, if you like gauchos, wear them! Don't get hung up on how different you look from everybody else.  That bottles up your personality.  Instead, concentrate on making others feel special and you'll be the prettiest one in the room.  (Not that that's...er....anything to strive for...)

∞ Modesty quote of the Day ∞

"Always remember that when you are on top of the world, that the earth rotates every 24 hours."
- Steve G. Makris

^ Thought this was too funny to pass up.  Remember that everything you have comes from God - he gives and he taketh away.  Praise him through all of it.

  ∞ Thank You ∞

Marie, thanks so much for hosting this event.  I had a blast, and I think this is great way to spread the news that modesty is fun! May God smile upon you and bless you :)

So two last words, not just for Marie, but for all of you -

YOU ROCK, EXACTLY THE WAY YOU ARE!

AMFS - Day 5

My outfit for Day 5....

∞ The Specifics ∞

Tank: Arizona / ?
Plaid Shirt / Belt: FANG / JCPenney
Jeans: Arizona ( I think) / Target, for a whopping $4
Horse necklace and earrings: Gifts
Shoes: Imagine my ruched boots again ;0)

∞ Fashion tip of the day ∞

Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone; even if you think something's not your style, try it on anyway.  You could be surprised.  Like me and skinny jeans.  Well, not exactly...I still don't like them very much... :)

AMFS - Day 4

My outfit:

I love all the different colors and textures in this outfit.  The jacket was something I got as a hand-me-down, and then I stuck it at the back of my closet...so in other words, it's a "re-discover"!

I think it's a nice mix of business-lady (jacket), rebel (colors...I wore this today with blue eyeshadow), and cowgirl (boots).

Sorry - I tried to get a really close-up picture of the jewelry, but it didn't work.  The necklace is made of Black Hills gold and the earrings are apple-green on the side.

∞ The Specifics ∞

Jacket: Mossimo / Hand-me-down
Shirt: So / JCPenney
Jeans: Arizona / JCPenney
Boots: Mossimo / Target
Necklace: Landstrom's / Gift
Earrings: Jody Coyote / Gift

∞ Fashion Tip of the Day ∞

If you have wider shoulders than hips, wear dark pants and a light top for the most flattering results.  If you have wider hips than shoulders, wear a darker top and lighter pants.

See you tomorrow, friends.

AMFS - Day 3

Outfit for Day 3:

Sorry 'bout the shadow...

With a purse.  I'm actually not sure how I feel about my purse paired with this outfit.  Do you think it goes well, or does it clash?

Close-up of purse and jewelry.  The purse has a zipper pocket on the back, plus two inside, one on each side of the large middle pocket.

I really love this outfit because it is comfortable, and it manages to look modern and Jane Austen-y at the same time.  And I'll tell you a secret - my model for Torn Heart is wearing this gray top.  :) (Yeah, I really don't know if you'd call it a top or a dress. :P) Oh yeah, and I would be wearing shoes with this dress, but I don't have them yet.  So just picture some tall, ruched boots.

∞ The Specifics ∞

Dress/top: Converse / Target
Cami: Arizona / Target (?)
Leggings: Arizona, I think.  Don't hold me to that.
Purse: Target....
Jewelry: White Stag / Gift
Watch: Ignore the watch.  I forgot to take it off - it is not part of the outfit.

∞ Fashion tip of the day ∞

If you are looking for some real nice and modest jeans with no luck, go shopping at a tack store.  (Horse store.) Let me tell you, you can not ride a horse very well in super tight low-risers.  I have a pair of Wranglers and they are comfortable - usually, even mid-rise jeans drive me CRAZY - have deep pockets, they have a grip waist, and fit well without being too baggy.

∞ Modesty quote of the day ∞

"Act as though you cannot fail but keep a humble spirit." - Unknown
(Remember, modesty is more than just staying covered up.  It's a way of walking, talking, and interacting.)

AMFS - Day 2

My outfit for Day 2:

I'm not sure how I feel about vests, but I really like this one.  It's in my color and I had the perfect shirt to go under it at home.  The big pom-poms can be kind of a pain, though...once I was wearing this on a field trip and this little kid came up and yanked one of the pom-poms way out.  Grrr.....

∞ The Specifics ∞

Shirt: Mossimo / Hand-me-down
Vest: Le Tigre / JCPenney
Jeans: Arizona / JCPenney
Hoop earrings and flower necklace: Claires

∞ Today's fashion tip ∞

3 Ways to Spend Less Money on Clothes
1.  Watch out for sales.  No, I don't mean so that you can take advantage of them - I mean, be careful.  Do you really need the shirt that's on sale for, "Buy one, get one 88¢"? Often, the shirt you buy is over-priced to make up for the 88¢ 'deal'.
2.  Go through your closet often so that you'll know exactly how many jean jackets / fluffy skirts / whatev. you have.  It helps to keep things in perspective.
3.  Check out your local thrift store or go garage-saling.  You can also sell your old clothes using this method.

Autumn Modest Fashion Showcase - Day 1

Here's the outfit I wore to church this morning.  I dressed up a rather basic sweater and denim skirt with a piece of handmade (not by me - by a lady at a craft fair :D) jewelry and some cowgal boots.

∞ The Specifics ∞

Sweater - Merona / Got at Land's End (?)
Skirt - No Boundaries / Thrift Store
Necklace - Handmade with a picture jasper stone / Craft Show
Boots - Mossimo Supply / Target

∞ Today's modesty quote ∞

"Your dress should be tight enough to show you're a woman and loose enough to show you're a lady."
- Edith Head

∞ Today's fashion tip ∞

If you're sick of dressing like everyone else, look for a handmade piece of jewelry or check out your local thrift store.  You never know where you might find treasures! Oh, and a lot of you sew, so that takes care of that problem :)

Love,
Ellyn
