Goodbye, My Friends....

I come with news.  I'm doing a challenge that requires taking the whole month of March off from Facebook, blogs, and all other such things.

I get 15 min. a day for personal email time and 5 min. a day, six days a week for emergency internet time.  And I will honor Sunday by staying off the computer completely.  Not even writing that day, which of course doesn't count for the said challenge.  :)

What's the point of this, you ask? To grow closer to God.  The challenge requires 15 min. spent with God each day (or more), and I really need to start a daily prayer time, so I hope to get down on myself about that :)

If you want to do the same challenge, you can find it at http://lovingthelord.org/, and it's called the "Winter Media Minimization Challenge."

---

So, it will be a long time.  But it will only be thirty-one days until I am back - your happy blogger once more! And there will be changes.

- Behind the Wheel: Ja, ja.  I've only driven three times so far, and only once on a real road.  It was...interesting.  I had both Mom and Dad in the car, because we were going to my ortho consultation, but I think they both did very well. :)  I even got up to 40 mph.  Shocking.

- Firearm Safety Course: I admit to all you hunters that I've never shot, much less really touched, a working gun in my life.  It will be good to know how to handle one - please pray I don't shoot anyone through the head.

- Braces: Not too excited about the sour candy discipline of these metal bars, but I am excited to get my teeth straightened out.  When I come back in April, you'll definitely get pictures.

As well as the above, and spending time with God, I want to start reading Little Dorrit (we watched the TV series and OH MY was it good!), make a key-lime pie, lunge/ride Indy every week, get up to 200 pages in Seaspear (is it possible?), and try my hand at either steampunk or sci-fi.

Mwa! Bye! I love you all! While I'm gone, could you vote on my poll? I'll use the results to get back into blogging on April 1.

Indy in the Sun

It's been a while since I last posted some horse pictures.  We have just had our mid winter thaw - which is a bit like a mid-life crisis, with all the mud and such.  Luckily, we had a raging wind blow up that got rid of lots of sitting water, but we still have ice patches that froze when the weather turned ugly again.

Though, in MN, 20 degrees is still balmy.

Anyway, I had fun with Indy a few days ago.  We worked on no-line lunging and I tried to teach him how to turn around with the whip while lunging.

I also had a mini photoshoot with his ex-girlfriend, Blondie.  (Don't worry, there aren't hard feelings - they've drifted apart to 'just friends' now.)

Not one - by any means - to give others all the lens-room, Alpha butted in.

This was actually before Indy and I went a-laboring.  But afterwards, when I had released him from his prison (indoor arena, more on that later), we nuzzled and then he started walking across the pasture.  Sunlight hit! I was so glad I had the camera.

I wuv my boy ^_^

Also, when I went riding with Shelby a week ago, I realized how much he has improved since I got him.      Last year, dear Indy would flip out if he was in the indoor arena with another horse and the other horse was taken away.  He'd be tied to the wall, but he'd turn in 180 degree angles back and forth, back and forth, and he would not listen to me at all.  It was almost impossible to groom him or do anything at his side in the indoor while he was tied up.  But when I was with Shelby, she brought Jake out and asked me to come out and help her mount up bareback.

"Okay," I said, a squick wary of what Indy would do, 'cause he was already looking wild-eyed and he neighed as I spoke.  "Let's make this quick."

But, I went out, helped her mount up, took my time on the 10 feet back to the door, and when I opened the door, there stood Indy.  Yes, he was standing still and watching me.  So that was a big wow.

It makes me happy that he respects me more than he did last year.

Despite what happened on the actual ride of Shelby and me....*groans* Thank goodness for the deep snow so Indy's "jigging" didn't turn into a full-out gallop for the barn.

But we'll take things one step at a time.

A Fencing Lesson - Part 2: Posture and Armor

Alek raised his sword.  "On guard, sir!"

Deryn hefted her own weapon, studying Alek's pose.  His feet were splayed at right angles, his left arm sticking out behind him like the handle of a teacup.  His fencing armor made him look like a walking quilt. Even with his sword pointed straight at her, he looked barking silly.

"Do I have to stand like that?" she asked.

- Behemoth, by Scott Westerfeld

Yes, you do have to stand like that, and don't expect to look sophisticated, because you won't.
Posture is a very important part of fencing, so much so that in the above lesson, Alek tells Deryn to stand completely still in the right position for one whole hour.  She gets out of that, of course.  And don't worry, that's not what I'll make you do.  First, I'll take apart Scott Westerfeld's lovely paragraph about the fencing position piece by piece, because you cannot overlook posture if you want to learn how to fence.  So.  Ready?

Feet splayed at right angles

That's exactly right.  If you're right handed, you want your right foot horizontally perpendicular to your left foot.  (I'm doing geometry this year :D) To get in this position, you want to stand like this:

....And then take a wide step forward with your right foot.  Now that you've put a few feet between your right angle position, bend your knees so that they are plumb with your toes (meaning, they are right above your toes) and rest your weight on your back leg.

Your knees are bent so you can move faster.  You are also lower down, making you a smaller target.  Also, about that - you want to keep your side facing your opponent, not your torso.  Especially if you're fighting with a foil, standing straight on with them is like presenting yourself on platter with salt and pepper for flavoring.  Sound appealing? Maybe for them it does.

Left Arm Sticking Out Behind

All right, here we have a few options.  You can go with the "handle of a teacup look" if you wish, but while fighting foil, the "aimlessly muscular" look is much more stylish.

Aimlessly Muscular
Handle of a Teacup

See? It's cool.  Just don't put your hand behind your back like you may have seen some Spanish movie conquistador do, or you'll get whacked - that's what my brother did to me :D

Sword Grip

Also, when you hold your weapon, you want your wrist straight with the hilt, like this.  Remember to keep your grip firm, yet relaxed.
YES
NO

Perfect! Now look at my checklist.

- Feet at right angles

- Knees bent over toes

- Left arm in the Aimlessly Muscular position (yeah, I did make that term up...*blush*)

- Right hand holding sword with wrist straight with the hilt

- Grip firm and relaxed

The Walking Quilt

We don't wear fencing armor when we Nerf fight - but it would be a good idea.  I've gotten stabbed in...an uncomfortable place to be stabbed :D  I'd wear it, I just don't have it.

I'm not going to go into all the electronic scoring systems and stuff, because that just...takes away the medieval charm of fencing, and it would take too long.  So, the typical fencing armor consists of a canvas-like jacket like this.

That strap does go between your legs, yes.  I've seen two kinds of jackets - one kind snaps up the front and one kind zips up the back.  But there could be more than that.  At fencing class we always had to zip each other up before practice :)

A helmet...

not my photo

The rule in fencing class was: no touching another person's blade with your own blade unless you are wearing a helmet.  It's a smart rule.  But the helmets do get to be kind of a pain, especially when you have to take them off and put them back on again for salutes and such.  Talk about helmet hair...I should have had mine tied back every time.

The last thing you need is a heavy glove to protect your sword hand.  Some use gloves on both hands.  It doesn't really matter, but you want to keep your fingers lily-white, now don't you?  :)

For your next lesson, we will discuss the actual technique.  In the meantime - practice that posture ;)

P.S.  Random: I drove a car for the first time ever today! Just to the end of the driveway and back, but still...

The Sweet Day

not my image
I'll admit, the above is what Valentine's Day means to me.  :)
But in celebration for this holiday of love, I did do some other stuff....

- Went to a sleepover "retreat" at my friend Anita's house for studies on marriage, a BBC romance, and sweet snacks.  It was a great and refreshing time, and we all had fun packing heart boxes with candy and tie-dye socks for the little girls at church.  We signed them, "The Valentine's Ninjas."

- Wrote a sappy snippet with my favorite couple in Hearts Unbroken.  Phew.  I'm glad that's out of my system, and it will stay in my notebook where no one can find it.

- Ate lots of yummy food at our Italian potluck at church.  Mmmm (!) After that, we went on a so-called "stroll" in the almost 50 degree weather and had a bare-hand snowball fight.  It was fun.  Not really related to Valentine's Day, but because it was so fun, I thought I should mention it.

- Thanked God for the tremendously deep love He has for me.

Romans 8:38-39 ~ For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld

Terms You Will Need To Know if You Read This Book:

Boffin: Someone important

Clanker: Someone who uses machinery instead of fabricated beasties - e.g., Austria-Hungary, Germany...

Darwinist: Someone who uses fabricated beasties in battle instead of machinery - e.g., Britain, Russia (I think)

Life-threads: DNA

Monkey-Luddite: someone who thinks fabricated beasties are Godless / heathen.  (That would be us.)

---

When Prince Aleksander is pulled from his bed in the middle of the night in regard to his studies, my first thought was of Prince Caspian.  But Alek isn't learning astronomy - he's having a piloting lesson.  As the powerful Cyclops Stormwalker machine brings him further and further from his castle, suspicions rise in Alek's mind and what he first thought to be an innocent lesson turns into something very different.

Meanwhile, in England, only a few countries away from Austria-Hungary, Deryn Sharp's nerves are catching up with her.  Not because she's about to be sent thousands of feet up into the air on a spooky, fabricated jellyfish - no, she's worried about being marked for what she really is - a girl.  Deryn's dying to fly again, and the only way she can think of to do it is join the Air Service.  But when the "head for heights" test goes wrong, Deryn is stranded in the middle of the sky.  Little does she know that a huge, fabricated airship is about to break through the clouds.

Leviathan.  A creature inflated with hydrogen and populated with other creatures who help keep it in the air.  (An ecosystem in the sky.)  Fléchette bats, hydrogen sniffers, and glow-worms share quarters with the men who fly the airship.  No, friends, this is no aeroplane.  This is a living creature, who eats, breathes, and sees.

---

Scott Westerfeld is a genius.  When I found out he was the author of the Pretties / Uglies series, I was skeptical - which is unfair, cause I've never read it! - but Leviathan took my breath away.  It's technically a steampunk novel, and it takes place at the brink of World War I, year 1914, to be exact.  Mr.  Westerfeld knows exactly how to mix fact with fiction - he doesn't have too much of either one, and WOW! The result is...great.  :D *Ellyn realizes how gushy she must sound and blushes here*

I couldn't wait to do a review on this book, because as good as it is, there are several...contraversial?... points to address.  Number one.  Swearing.  Deryn enjoys "swearing like a boy", and even though none of our bad words are used, swearing Deryn's way is made pretty appealing.  When I finished, I really wanted to say "Blisters!" and "Barking spiders!" - but I couldn't, of course.  "Barkin' insertwordhere" is used quite a bit, as is the more questionable "bumrag."  However, I was able to add "squick" to my vocab.  (Not a swear word.)

Next, we need to talk about the Darwinist issue.  This is a world where Charles Darwin is exalted and esteemed - at least, on the British side.  Scientists are working on  fabricating new "beasties" from the "life-threads" of others.  Such is the Leviathan.  Personally, I don't mind this.  It kind of helps me regard evolution in the real world as what it really is - a fiction story, not yet to the scientific theory stage.  But is it a sin to "make" totally new animals? I found a verse in Leviticus, chapter 19, verse 19, that says, "Do not mate different kinds of animals."  And yet, under that verse is how you should not wear clothing of two pieces of material or plant your field with two kinds of seed.  So, is this the old law?

Even if it is, I still don't think that mating two kinds of animals in the real world would be right - it would mess up the natural ecosystems and creations that God made and put so much thought into.  What's your opinion? I'd love to hear it

---

The plot is five-star, the worldbuilding is five-star, and Deryn and Alek are both characters I can identify with.  I especially loved how they met, as I was afraid it would be awfully cheesy, but it was anything but.  Dr.  Barlow, the lady boffin, is great, and I've resolved that if we get a dog, I'm naming it "Tazza" after her tasmanian thylacine.

I got this book on audio, and I"d recommend that for you too, so you can get a feel for the way everyone talks.  (Just don't listen to it before bed - that's what I did once, and I was so excited afterward that I lay wide-awake in bed til' who knows when.)  But, after you get the audio, get the book, so you don't miss out on the fab full-page black and white illustrations by Keith Thompson.

My dad liked it so much he said, "I would not only buy this book, I'd buy it in hardcover," which is unusual for him.  I said, "I would not only check this out of the library a million times, I'd buy it in paperback," which is unusual for me.  :)  The sequel, Behemoth, is great too, though I like Leviathan better.  Gee, I need to review a bad book soon so you'll know not all I review gets such a high rating! I'll be on that in a squick... ;)

P.S.  One of my giveaway winners was unable to claim her copy, so I drew another and the winner is Amanda from Farmgirl Writes!!! Amanda, I will notify you on your blog so you can email me your address.  :)
