Here I sit, with dirt under my fingernails. I smell of dirt and sweat, and my legs are stiff from a long horseback ride yesterday and multiple treks to the woods today.
I wouldn't trade that feeling for the world.
(However, I also wouldn't trade the feeling of a nice cold shower in summer.)
I spent today doing what I love - farming. That is, if farming means chasing chickens and lugging sheets of rotting plywood around and smelling the lilacs by our border.
snowshoe - my garage sale chicken, currently molting. |
i cleared that path through the wreckage of an ex-fort today. i would have done more but there were fumes of rotten wood and...maybe....a dead skunk.... |
It was raining earlier, but now there's a warm, almost tropical breeze blowing in from who knows where. We got the garden planted, got the chickens into the orchard, my brother mowed the lawn, and I cleared out the stuff you see in the picture above, as well as hand mowing a little.
I feel sorry for anyone who hasn't learned how to love work. Remember, it will be hard before it will be easy. You have to just jump right in and get started. (Even if you're jumping in to a tangle of raspberries up to your waist.)
So go on - I dare you. Go work 'til your back aches, get your hands dirty, tie up your hair and roll up your sleeves. Work for God.
Colossians 3:23 - Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters [...] |
I make that a double-dog dare.

Amen! You go girl! ;)
Working your hardest with the right attitude, brings glory to God.
So jealous. I got my seeds, my shovel, and new flipflops, but my garden in too wet to till! Also Roanie has got two bad sores on her side so I can't ride her. Rats.
But! You'll be proud of me; I built a chicken run and pulled up a tree stump! Haha :)
I'm glad I'm not the only teen who loves working in the dirt.

Yeah! Another teen girl who isn't afraid of a little dirt! :-) I couldn't help but smile as I read this! I actually just did that the other day!:-)
I can imagine you in a huge Chevy truck, coated in dirt, with a trailer full of hay bales or something, and smiling really big. :) That's just what this post brought to mind!
Love the pictures of Indy...such a pretty boy. :D
You go girl! I know that feeling of working hard and then being able to sit back and relax without that sinking feeling in your stomach that you should probably be doing something :D. This weekend our big project was loading and unloading 50 bales of hay :) Oh, and btw, do y'all keep Indy at y'all's place? Just wondering :)

Great post Ellyn! I love farm work and am trying to learn to love other work! :)
Thank you for the comment, I can send you the full recipe if you want - instead of just a Proverbs verse it says what to stir in in what order.
Alright, I guess it's time to get off this thing and get back to work! :)
