Everyone who rides has problems with flies in the summer. When I take Indy onto a road near our house that runs through the woods, its like entering a war zone. But here's something that might help:
Bounce dryer sheets. The bugs dislike their smell, and you just tuck them or fold them around your horse's halter to keep the head safe. You can also rub them over your horse, but that doesn't usually work very well.
